Our way is peace

CIM TEAM On July - 10 - 2015

On July 7th 2015, we hosted our fifth annual Interfaith Iftar meal in Mali Park in Sanski Most. Around 500 people were in attendence, including the mayor of Sanski Most, all three local religious leaders (from the Muslim, Orthodox, and Catholic communities),  representatives from the U.S. Embassy, USAID, the visiting Global Youth Connect delegation, and local community members and CIM volunteers.

In Islam, the holy month of Ramadan is the month of fasting, and developing a closer connection with God. Because the Islamic calander relies on the moon, the exact dates of Ramadan change each year. As the dates change, Ramadan rotates throughout the seasons. Able-bodied individuals fast throughout the month, abstaining from eating or drinking, physical intimacy, smoking, telling lies, and other practices. The fasting period occurs from twenty minutes before sunrise until sunset. “Iftar” is the time when the sun officially sets and the fast can be broken; traditionally, the fast is first broken with a date, apricot, or other dried fruit.

CIM’s interfaith Iftar event started as a small, private gathering of friends of differing religious backgrounds, and has since grown into a large, public event that is well anticipated.  The dinner consisted of traditional Bosnian foods, including cevapi, burek, sirnica, and hurmasica, as well as chicken, salads, fruit, water, juice and coffee. The event is open to all who wish to attend, regardless of faith.

Interfaith Iftar is community-sponsored. Residents and local businesses donated food and money, and CIM volunteers helped set up, serve, and clean up throughout the night.
